State of Mind

This week, I’d ask you to consider what state of mind you have been in lately.

Better yet, have you had any “Whoosah” moments?

Whoosah is a slang expression variously used to indicate or achieve a state of calm and relaxation.

Particularly when you don’t have anywhere to go, you can let your mind wander or relax. I decided to relax.

However, how do you put yourself in the proper frame of mind in California, celebrating 100 years of Toastmasters down the street from Disneyland?

On top of that, the second day you’re in California, there is an earthquake.

Between the peaks and valleys and various roller coaster thoughts, I wasn’t on vacation but on an adventure that would be an incredible seven-day journey.
Over the last seven days (August 11, 2024, through August 17, 2024), I had the unique opportunity to be in a specific state of mind during our Annual Toastmasters Convention in Anaheim, California.

It was our centennial celebration!

What was interesting for me was being with and around like-minded people who brought Toastmasters into their minds and worlds.

Notably, being around so many like-minded people, with the majority present having the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) designation behind their names, me included.

The Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award represents the highest level of educational achievement in Toastmasters.

Even though we were celebrating 100 years in the area where Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, our founder, created the vision of Toastmasters, something was different.

My state of mind during the Annual Toastmasters Convention had me reflecting on why I was here and the opportunity to attend a Toastmasters meeting at the first club established. (Smedley Chapter One Toastmasters Club in Santa Ana, California.) Founders District!

The meeting theme was “Walk in the footsteps of Ralph Smedley.”

I physically took a tour from his Church to the YMCA building, which all happened under the vision of Dr. Ralph C. Smedley.
To be clear, Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that builds confidence and teaches public speaking skills through a worldwide network of clubs that meet online and in person.

Toastmasters International, as the name implies, has approximately 270,000 members in more than 14,000 clubs in 150 countries.

Seeing and hearing each of the 150 countries’ names and flags during the opening ceremony or the parade of flags this week was a state of mind.

Our newest country, added to the list less than six weeks ago, was Mauritius, officially the Republic of Mauritius.

During one of our leadership training sessions, I had a NEXUS moment when the gentleman introduced himself and gave me his card.

All the top three leaders of each district (known as the Trio) attended workshops in their specific areas, and the gentleman from the Republic of Mauritius was also a Program Quality Director, like me.

It was electrifying during the opening ceremony on Wednesday night, with the entire Toastmasters community present.

Sitting in the audience, I thought about the connection of my two grandsons’ father, who has roots in Mauritius because his mother is from that island.

Today, many speakers, myself included, give credit to their experiences with Toastmasters.

Yet, every day, people have no idea of the benefits of Toastmasters International.

It’s an organization where members invest in themselves at a small cost of $60 every six months. Those joining the first time also pay a new member fee of $20, which supports your designated pathway projects.

The Toastmasters International tagline is “Where Leaders are Made.”

When I think about leaders and Toastmasters, I also think about a call to action.

Each of us wants our listeners to take action after hearing our speeches. With Toastmasters, the learning never stops. Join Toastmasters, and you will:

Toastmasters is not about flying alone like the Eagles; it’s more about being a pigeon and flocking together to help each other succeed.

As they say, “Don’t be afraid to be outnumbered; Eagles fly alone, pigeons flock together.”

I admit my adventure never stopped, as the first leg of my trip back home took me to Atlanta. I heard babies crying on the plane and watched an individual needing medication as I hustled to get from Concourse A to D to catch my connecting flight.

As luck would have it, I made it to my seat within twenty minutes, and the aircraft closed its doors, not knowing it would be grounded from taking off because of the thunderstorms in Atlanta.

I learned that they had weather birds or spotters in the air to determine the best routes for things like this.

It didn’t matter to me because I was on the plane and had nowhere to go but home.

There was no connection except to get in the car.

As I thought about everything I had been through the entire week, waiting for the storm to pass was the least of my worries.

Today, I challenge you to think about the state of mind you have been in lately and all those “Whoosah” moments. Where you able to achieve a state of calm and relaxation?

We all have the same 24 hours; how are you spending yours?

Today, I thought about everything I needed to accomplish and realized we all have the same 24 hours to finish things.

I’m not one for procrastinating; however, there is a limit to my patience when I know I need to accomplish a specific task.

I’m reminded of Peter F. Drucker, known as “The Father of Modern Management,” that many have forgotten about because of our era.

Yet there are many lessons we can learn in his book “Managing in Time of Great Change.”

Shining shoes and ironing are some of my tasks, although not significant.

Because I practice time management, I will shine up to eight pairs of shoes at one time or wait until I have one week’s worth of laundry to iron before accomplishing the task.

It’s OCD in me or a specific habit that live by, because I don’t particularly appreciate putting anything away in my closet without it being ready to wear later.

I’m blessed that I can pack for a trip at a moment’s notice and never have to iron anything because everything in my closet is ready to go.

I constantly thank God for blessing me with shoes and clothes.

For some reason, this week, I thought about all the rich people who have the luxury of having their shoes shined and clothes ironed.

For them, it’s probably a task beneath them, and I have never forgotten where I came from.

At an early age, I remember laying out my clothes for the week and having one pair of shoes shine as I prepared for my inspection by my mother.

However, luxury is not always available for everyday people, especially if it’s something you like doing.

It’s incredible how many of us spend our time each day.

We have many competing priorities, and unforeseen things which pull us in various directions.

I’m reminded of all the book reports and papers I wrote over the years and how it feels to not be stressed about completing these tasks.

Today, as an educator, when I go into various colleges and speak with students, many don’t have the focus that I have regarding proper planning.

Yet, many don’t know where their time goes, which could lead them to greater productivity and effectiveness.

Time Management the Peter Drucker Way | Psychology Today

Many of us have heard or used the Pareto Principle regarding time management.

Pareto Principle (The 80-20 Rule): Examples & More (simplypsychology.org)

Pareto says, “The top 20% of your priorities will give you an 80% return if you spend 80% of your time on the top 20% of your priorities.”

Don’t try to manage your time – manage yourself! – John Maxwell

I also learned that “There’s no such thing as time management” and that we must better manage ourselves.

Yet, countless time management courses are out there for the taking.

I remember using the PalmPilot from 2000-2004 to help me manage my time as my personal data assistant (PDA).

However, with the emergence of Smart Phones, the PalmPilot PDA quickly became obsolete.

Today, with so much at our fingertips with the invention of Artificial Intelligence, we can use it to help manage our time.

Master Time Management with Artificial Intelligence (AI) (ridiculouslyefficient.com)

I haven’t gotten that far yet using all available; however, I believe we each must do a better job mentally managing our time.

Although we all have the same 24 hours, many have not broken the code and figured out how to complete more on time.

As you enjoy this Labor Day Weekend, think about all those who still need to punch in on a time clock.

In closing, my heart goes out to those average Americans still working 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to survive or make a basic living.

Labor Day 2024: Facts, Meaning & Founding | HISTORY

Enjoy your time and remember that we all have the same 24 hours a day.  Some of us have figured out how to manage it better.

I trust that you are one of them.

Today, you have three quotes that may best resonate with you.

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” – Benjamin Franklin

“Let our advance worrying become advance thinking and planning.” – Winston Churchill

“If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.” – Yogi Berra

Knowing there’s no such thing as time management, I challenge you to think about your time management skills, as we all have the same 24 hours each day to plan, think, and prepare for our future.

An Act of Kindness

When did you last pay attention to your surroundings, and were you kind?

After September 11, 2001, or 9-11, many of us, myself included, paid closer attention to our surroundings when we walked into any building or restaurant.

It would be fourteen years later that out of nowhere, we were forced to pay closer attention in our churches after the mass shooting at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C.

Charleston church shooting | June 17, 2015 | HISTORY

Have you ever had a moment where you asked yourself if only people could see what you see?

This past Saturday, I had such a moment or experience as I stood at the podium praying the Rosary before the congregation’s start of the 5 PM Vigil Mass.

It was a moment of reflection and gratitude, witnessing several years of being part of the church and seeing the same parishioners walk through the doors before Mass.

In most churches, people tend to sit in the same pews each Saturday or Sunday.

I am a Saturday Vigil Mass person and have primarily sat in the same area for four years.

As I patiently awaited my rotation with the other person saying the decade, my inner thoughts were, “I wonder if people could only see what I see.”

The opportunity to watch people entering through the doors and going to their specific pews brought me gratitude in various ways.

It all started when I noticed a very active parish couple enter the sanctuary.  The wife was escorting her husband, who was disabled, to find a seat to sit.  If only you could have seen the smiles on both of their faces walking in and sitting down and interacting with each other.

For me, it was the wife giving her husband all the attention he needed and the husband being grateful for his wife’s arm as she escorted him to his pew.  I would call it a badge of honor.

Too many times I’ve seen disabled people struggling, yet they grin and bear it, while others are oblivious to their physical challenges.

While seeing it from the pulpit, I had not witnessed that specific act of kindness until this past Saturday.

The genuine concern, boldly given that I’m here for you and that you are my priority, is what I felt,

I also intentionally looked at the facial expressions as I stood looking out.  It was something about the demeanors or their conduct of manner through the actions of those entering the church as each person found their way to sit down.

I noticed how some held the hands of their spouse or significant other while others honored their commitment by attending Mass.

As one who fully understands the concepts behind the book “The Starfish and the Spider” by Ori Brafman, I have an inside view that others do not have. I was trained for five weeks by the author to think, act, and operate more decentralized.

Mainly because many have never read the book “The Starfish and the Spider” or even know why only a few of us are trained in this concept. As Walter Brennan would say in The Guns of Will Sonnett, “No brag just fact.”

I thought about everyone there each week doing their specific duties to help make the church operate in a decentralized manner, myself included.

“The Starfish and the Spider by Ori Brafman explores the power and potential of decentralized organizations and their ability to thrive in today’s interconnected world.”

https://irevolutions.org/2010/01/09/starfish-spider-decentralization/

It’s hard to believe that almost 14 years ago, in October 2010, I was one of the few selected by the Army to receive training in these concepts and be taught by the author Ori Brafman.

After completing the course in November 2010, before Thanksgiving, my signed copy of the book is one of my prized possessions.

I count my Starfish training as a privilege and continue to use it today.

You and I pay attention to various things, and sometimes, what we need to pay attention to what is right under our noses; however, we can’t see it.

We’re too busy being distracted and are caught off guard when others find what we are looking for.

Today, I challenge you to take a few minutes and ask yourself if you are paying attention to your surroundings and being kind.

I also ask that you think about the various insights you’ve had this past week through the act of paying attention.

My specific insights, for example, this past week was seeing children growing up and watching parents beam with pride.

One of the Parishioners I serve with as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, who usually sits either in front or behind me, had their oldest son at Mass this weekend.

I’ve seen him before during the holidays and when school is not in session.

As I greeted the family, I asked, “Is this the West Pointer?”

The short answer was yes, and an acknowledgment that their younger daughter, who recently graduated high school, is now witnessing what West Point was all about as a first-year Plebe or a Fourth Class Cadet compared to her brother.

As I close, I must reflect on the wife who showed kindness in caring for her disabled husband.

In the military, we are taught and reminded that someone is always watching us without knowing it.  Therefore, our actions sometimes speak louder than our words.

As Bob Kerrey say’s, “Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change.

The Starfish training I mentioned today taught me kindness and changed how I see things.  Ori Brafman’s final comment to us before graduation was to be kind.

These are words I have never forgotten.  This past weekend was my reminder to be kind to others.

In today’s fast-paced world, the importance of effective communication cannot be overstated. Public speakers have the unique ability to captivate an audience, convey complex ideas clearly, and inspire action. If you're organizing an event in the Alabama area, hiring the best public speakers near Alabama can significantly enhance the impact and success of your event.

The Power of Public Speaking

Public speaking is an art that requires a combination of skill, experience, and charisma. A talented speaker can engage an audience, regardless of the topic, and leave a lasting impression. The best public speakers are not just knowledgeable about their subject matter; they are also adept at connecting with their audience on an emotional level. This connection is what makes their message resonate and motivates the audience to take action.

When you hire a top-tier public speaker, you are not just bringing in someone to fill a time slot. You are providing your audience with an experience that can educate, entertain, and inspire. This is particularly important in professional settings, where the right speaker can elevate an event from ordinary to extraordinary.

The Benefits of Hiring Local Public Speakers Near Alabama

There are several compelling reasons to hire public speakers who are based near Alabama, especially if you are organizing an event in the region. Local speakers bring a unique set of advantages that can enhance the overall quality of your event.

  1. Familiarity with the Audience

They can reference local events, issues, and landmarks, making their presentation more relatable and engaging. This connection helps to establish rapport with the audience, which is crucial for effective communication.

  1. Cost-Effective Solutions

Hiring local public speakers can also be more cost-effective. When you choose a speaker who is already based near your event location, you can save on travel and accommodation expenses. Additionally, local speakers are often more flexible with scheduling, making it easier to coordinate their participation in your event. These cost savings can be significant, especially for smaller organizations or events with limited budgets.

An engaging presentation style is a hallmark of a great public speaker. The best speakers know how to capture the audience’s attention from the moment they step on stage. They use a variety of techniques, such as storytelling, humor, and interactive elements, to keep the audience engaged throughout the presentation. This ability to hold the audience’s attention is crucial for delivering a message that will be remembered long after the event is over.

  1. Passion and Authenticity

Passion and authenticity are key ingredients in any successful public speaking engagement. When a speaker is genuinely passionate about their topic, it shows in their delivery. What’s Your Niche?

The question today is, what’s your Niche?

You and I may not have the veracity (power of conveying or perceiving truth) or the tenacity of Thomas Edison, but I believe we all have a niche within us.

Have you ever thought about how you gain mastery of your Niche, or are you satisfied with the gifts you possess?

I think about great sports announcers and their golden voices as they use their Niche within them regarding how well they speak.

Many know people with a specific knack for doing various things very well.

I think of myself as work in process through the help of God.

How often have others told me you can’t do that?

Therefore, what is that specific Niche or gift that you have that you are willing to share with others?

You and I can’t or should not dismiss what we are called to do.  For me, it’s my calling.

The words Autotelic Personality are something you should think about.

What Is an Autotelic and How to Recognize If This Is You – Learning Mind (learning-mind.com)

I learned this from reading Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Mihaly Robert Csikszentmihalyi, which also describes Autotelic Personality.

We must try to understand our purpose in life and what God has created us to do.

I often think about the scriptures of Psalm 23 when people tell me what I can and cannot do.

The Beautiful Meaning Of Psalm 23 (verse by verse explanation) (rethinknow.org)

I have a niche in saying the rosary every Saturday evening before the 5 PM Mass.

Although saying the rosary brings a feeling of happiness for something I have been doing for years, reciting the rosary out loud for others to participate in strengthens my faith.

It’s a niche that I’m honored to have the support of both the Parish and the Priest.

I also have a niche that allows me to cook a meal quickly because I have replicated or envisioned the process of how long I think it should take to prepare it before I start.

Cooking is one of those niches I learned very early in life, growing up in a home with many siblings and having to feed myself and my younger siblings.

Today, we hear the analogy that “your riches are in your niches.”

The Riches Are In The Niches: Uncovering Your Path To Unique Success (richniches.com)

As many colleges or universities release students this year, I wonder what they are experiencing as they prepare to exit as successful college graduates.

What are the goals that feel right for them? Many will bring a specific niche into an organization or even start a business.

I’ve learned that being curious about where we focus our attention to develop our niches can benefit us.

Looking back on my specific niches, I realize those positive experiences that were not tied to money bring me the most happiness.

Something autotelic in Greek means “Self” and “Goal.” It is so enjoyable that I want to repeat it.

Knowing that we all have strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, channeling our energy is also essential.

Whether I’m cooking or saying the rosary, I’m not forced to do it because it brings me happiness and enjoyment.

Nothing is more irritating than watching someone who doesn’t want to do any task without the proper love of doing it.

I’ve witnessed how a dinner is often ruined because people were forced to cook out of necessity and did not put their heart into it.

Those two words of happiness and enjoyment helped me identify my primary Niche.

What are your two words?

Today it’s not about me or you, becoming an expert in something we both do well.

It’s about how we develop expertise, uncover the needs of others, and add value based on our potential to do more.

During my time in the military, it was word of mouth how others were chosen for their specific Niche because they could get the job done.

Who has your name on their tongues for something you do well that is linked to your Niche?

Last Saturday after Mass, I was approached by a gentleman who thanked me for leading the rosary as I was leaving.  I had not seen him before, or I didn’t recognize his face as he appealed to my Niche. At that moment, I gained something that accelerated my word-of-mouth influence.

Today, even if you don’t read the Bible, I challenge you to think about Psalm 23 and your Niche.

David is a great Advocate because of his tenacity to follow God as he dealt with Goliath.

Therefore, I know the answer: Who shall I fear when called to do something when others say I can’t?

Stick To Your Roots

This week, my inspiration came from a conversation about peanuts.

To some, nowadays, many children are allergic to peanuts.

When I grew up, there was little mention of peanut allergies.

Stanford Medicine for Children’s Health describes the” Signs of a peanut allergy, and despite its name, the peanut isn’t a nut at all. It’s a legume. Legumes are plants that grow underground. The group includes beans, peas, and lentils.”

In a Nutshell: Understanding Peanut Allergies – Stanford Medicine Children’s Health (stanfordchildrens.org)

Today, you and I can witness the number of processed foods consumed.

I’m not a health nut (pun intended); however, I’m cautious of my foods.

I have made conscious choices before purchasing by reading the labels, particularly the sugar content, causing me to leave it on the shelf.

As many prepare for summer outings and barbeques, the temptation to overeat and break diets will happen.

Interestingly enough, I’m always curious as I watch or see how people stick to their eating roots.

Nowadays, there are so many diet fads to choose from regarding eating healthy.

I also believe there are consequences when we don’t stick to our roots and allow the temptation of other foods that we know are not good for us to consume in our everyday lives.

I mentioned that a conversation around peanuts inspired me, but I didn’t tell you why.

Growing up, my father would buy peanuts, place them in the oven and roast them.

Several years ago, I ate plenty of peanuts when I tested my discipline for 21 days on the Daniel Fast Diet.

The Daniel Fast was something that I learned from a fellow soldier who was also a Pastor who asked me to try it; which I did.

The Daniel Fast was for my spiritual reasons, as the founder intended, and a test of discipline by sticking to my roots as I did one year during Lent.

I also ate plenty of beans, which I grew up eating when you come from a family with so many mouths to feed.

Knowing they suit me, I often wonder why I strayed off course from peanuts and beans.

The short answer is I don’t have a large family, and I’m not the only one living in the house with me.

In 2014, when I attended Darden Business School for a course taught by James G. Clawson, I learned about Values, Assumptions, Beliefs, and Expectations (VABES).  VABES are about the world, whether it is or should be.

The training opened up discussion on how our VABES affect our leadership and the leadership of others.

The course taught me to be more conscious of the values of others tied to their family roots as we uncovered various case studies and explored the three levels of leadership connected with our VABES.

https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/fundamentals-of-level/9781637420416/text/chapter78.xhtml

Depending on what specific part of the state you live in, your values are connected to your location and levels of human activity.

Visible Behavior, Conscious Thought, and VABES.

I know from living in New York that I will not find grits on the breakfast menu.

I also know that those with access to the coastal waters have greater access to fish, shrimp, and lobsters as their primary food.

Believe it or not, 39 years ago, I had not heard of a Shrimp Po Boy until I visited the Gulf Coast part of Mississippi, nor had I tasted Coffee with Chicory.

Only a few years ago, I experienced the taste of eating Boudin Balls, a Cajun thing in Louisiana.

Today, you and I have so many options for fast food in our midst.

Look around where you live or have been recently with new fast-food restaurants in your location.

For some, roots running deep is taboo.

Understanding the Phrase “Roots Run Deep” (youtube.com)

Finally, the roots of our faith are vast and have different meanings.

Roots of Our Faith | Resources | Moody Radio

Today, I ask you to consider how far off course you have strayed from your roots based on Values, Assumptions, Beliefs, and Expectations (VABES).

I challenge you to continue living your best life today as you think about how far you have come and where you are going.

This week, we celebrate the 4th of July rooted in various traditions.

It will be interesting to see what your roots have taught you!
